Fun Fact:

Did you know American Bulldogs were nearly extinct after World War Two? The breed was saved almost single-handedly by a man named John D. Johnson, who spent decades travelling the American South to find and breed the remaining dogs. Without him, this incredible breed might not exist today. We owe John a lot.

FAQs

What size harness does an American Bulldog need?

Most adult American Bulldogs need a Large or XL depending on their build - males especially can be very substantial. Always measure chest girth and neck circumference and check our size calculator

Is my American Bulldog likely to pull on the lead?

They can be - particularly during the adolescent phase. A front-clip harness combined with consistent training is the most effective approach. Starting early makes a real difference.

Is a harness or collar better for an American Bulldog?

Both have a role. A harness is better for walks - it gives better control and distributes pressure more safely across your dog's chest. A strong collar with solid hardware is still important for ID and as a backup.

How do I manage reactivity on walks?

A front-clip harness, a traffic handle lead, and structured training are your toolkit. The gear gives you control in the moment - the training creates lasting change.

What hardware should I look for on a lead?

Always go for solid metal clips - never plastic - with bar-tack stitching on the handle and clip attachment points. If it's not built for powerful breeds, it's not built for your dog."
