FAQs

Puppies can start wearing a collar from about 8 weeks old, but make sure it’s soft, lightweight, and adjustable to keep them comfy as they grow. You should remove the collar at night to avoid them getting tangled, and ensure that the collar fits them well so they can’t wriggle out of it.

Why should your puppy wear a collar?

  • Introducing a collar early gets them used to the sensation faster
  • You can add ID to the collar, just in case your puppy runs off
  • Starting lead training is much easier if they’re already used to the collar

Choosing a collar specifically designed for puppies is always a good idea when starting them out at a young age. Ours are all made from soft, comfortable, lightweight material, with fully adjustable straps, allowing them to grow with your pup.

Make sure you’re checking the sizing as they get bigger: too tight, and it could restrict their breathing; too loose, and they could easily wriggle out or get their jaw stuck in it. A good rule of thumb is to have it just snug enough to fit two fingers between the collar and their neck.

To find the right size for your puppy, you can use our handy size charts.

REMEMBER: Use our dog collar size charts, specific to the product you are considering, to find the best one for your dog - you can find these on our product pages.

It’s generally better to walk a puppy with a harness over a collar, since it offers more control and prevents putting too much pressure on their fragile neck (they’ll probably pull a lot when learning to walk on the lead). Look for something soft and lightweight, with adjustable straps for comfort.

Harnesses vs. collars for walking puppies

Harness:

  • Evenly distributes pressure across chest
  • More secure when out on walks
  • May take some time to get used to

Collars

  • Easier to slip out of / Less control
  • More convenient to put on & take off
  • Puts pressure on developing and delicate necks

When you’re not on a walk, a collar is a great option to add that extra level of security in case your pup slips out the door. Whether it’s to add an ID tag, a quick clip-on of the lead, or just a splash of colour a good quality puppy collar is a great thing to have on hand.

Yes, you should take your puppy’s collar off at night, as there is a risk that it could get caught on their bedding, crate, or furniture. It also gives their skin a break, helping them sleep more comfortably in this vital stage of development.

Why should you take off your puppy’s collar at night?

  • It reduces the chance of accidents while they’re unsupervised
  • It prevents fur matting, skin irritation, and pressure around the neck
  • It helps your pup sleep better without jingling tags or discomfort

Letting your puppy sleep collar-free is a simple way to keep them safe and comfy through the night. Just make sure their collar is well-fitted when they’re wearing it during the day so they can’t wriggle out: the general rule is to have it snug enough to fit two fingers underneath.
