The chest measurement of your dog, or the girth, is the first measurement you’ll need to take. This can be taken by placing the measuring tape around the widest part of your dog’s torso, usually just behind the front legs.

The next measurement should be taken around the lower part of your dog’s neck, simply measure the widest part at the base of the neck as this is where the harness is going to sit. This size chart is based on min-max measurements.

This harness is designed for exceptional comfort and durability. It includes three points of contact for a lead: two on the back and one on the chest. The design specifically avoids sensitive areas, such as the underarms, which can be prone to rubbing. This not only provides substantial control over your dog but also enhances the walking experience.

Some dogs are nearly impossible to walk, while others tend to pull strongly. Many can wander a lot or may refuse to walk at times. If taking your dog for a walk feels like a struggle, we highly recommend this product. Its multiple contact points reduce the risk of injury and make it easier to control even the most challenging dogs.

If your dog is a strong puller, consider this harness design a game changer. We recommend using it in conjunction with our Double Ended Training Leads, which can be attached to multiple D-Loops on this harness.

Customer photo review of Billowthane® Training Anti Pull TRI-Harness® | M-XL Breeds - Black

Love, love, love the billowthane range! The harness is on the heavy side so do keep that in mind, but the build quality is amazing. My dog doesn't like straps that sit on his ribs so this harness is great because it sits behind instead of on his ribs and he feels more comfortable. It took us some time to adjust it, but now it sits perfectly. The only downside is the painted buckles since my dog loves rolling around, they're already scraped - however, it is only cosmetic damage.

I have a 6 year old pitbull mix. She has always been bad about pulling. I use a six foot leash and there is never any slack in it. Tried the harness today and she started out pulling as usual. After about a hundred yards she quit and there was slack on the leash the rest of the way home. One thing I didn't like, is that it tends to twist on her body occasionally.

We have a 42kg plus German Shepherd who can be very reactive. I have sometimes been very nervous about taking him for a walk. However, this harness is a game changer. It is a serious piece of kit for larger dogs (the harness is quite heavy, but it does not restrict my dog's movement off the lead, he is quite active). It is a very strong harness with metal clips, which is very reassuring and it also has a handle on top, which is very useful for extra control when needed and this was one of the main reasons why I chose this harness. He doesn't even pull now when I have the lead attached to just one of the clips on the back of the harness. I bought size C. The straps were a bit difficult to adjust, but that was because my dog wouldn't stand still. It was expensive, but it is well worth the money.

Purchased this after seeing reviews on Malinois owners facebook group, I've got a 15month old czech wolfdog who periodically pulls so hard I'm scared of hurting her throat/airways. This harness gives a rock solid hold without compromising breathing etc. She took to it straight away, runs like mad in it and wears if for long walks. Strangely she is better behaved when wearing it, less reactive and generally calmer. Maybe she feels more secure or safe in it- Very solidly made, metal clips are more reassuring than the usual plastic items.

FAQs

How to put on a dog harness

Start by unbuckling the harness and having your dog sit or stand still next to you. Slip the harness over their head and pull the straps underneath their tummy. Or, if you have a step-in harness, place it on the floor and help your dog place their feet correctly, before pulling it up over their back. Fasten it up securely, making sure it’s not too tight or too loose, and adjust accordingly.

What is the best dog harness?

The best dog harness really depends on the breed, size, and activity level of your dog. The comfortable Hurricane Harness features a useful handle and is super lightweight, while the Premium Harness is a great all-rounder for any dog. The traditional slip-on harnesses offer quick and easy fitting, while step-in harnesses might be better for dogs that dislike harnesses going over their head. And if your dog pulls, the TRI-Harness helps with training to prevent excessive pulling on the lead. You can read more in our Dog Harness Buying Guide. All of our harnesses are lined with Neoprene which is soft and helps avoid harsh burns unlike other brands.

How to measure a harness for a dog

To measure your dog for a harness, grab a measuring tape and wrap it around the widest part of their ribcage, then measure their neck at the base (where the collar sits and not in the middle of the neck). Make sure that the measurements aren’t too tight, but are secure enough that the harness won’t slip off if your dog pulls.

If you have the harness already, try it on your dog and make sure you can fit two fingers between the harness and their body. Finally, monitor your dog’s behaviour - if they’re showing signs of discomfort or walking awkwardly, it may need adjusting more to suit your dog.

How to use a dog harness correctly

To ensure you’re using your dog harness correctly, you need to make sure it’s properly fitted. This means that it’s tight enough to prevent the harness moving, but loose enough to allow your pooch to move comfortably. Attach your lead to your chosen D-ring, whether that’s on their back or their chest, and get ready for your adventure!
