Dog Leads

We'd recommend shifting focus from your dog's lead to their harness/collar here.

Front-clipping, no-pull harnesses have been designed specifically to discourage your dog from pulling, working by redirecting their movements towards you when they pull. They give you more control, and are much more safe and secure than a regular collar.

How a no-pull harness helps.

• Safer than a collar: if your dog pulls, a collar can restrict their breathing, so a harness is much safer
• Better security: one of the dangers of a dog pulling is that they escape their collar, but a harness is much more difficult to slip out of
• Helps with training: a no-pull collar physically moves your dog’s body towards you if they try to pull, discouraging the behaviour

Whether you have a large breed, small breed, full grown dog or brand new puppy, a harness is a great choice if they pull on the lead.

Flexi, retractable leads can be good in some cases, but they’re not generally recommended by experts as they can encourage pulling. For you, the freedom of them might outweigh this danger - especially if your dog is already good on the lead.

If you’re taking your dog on runs with you, a shorter, fixed length lead is best. This ensures your dog won’t get too far away from you without you having to think about it, so you can focus on enjoying your run and not controlling your pup.

What to consider when running with your dog.

A hands-free lead can make it much easier to run and keep your dog close to you
Make sure your dog walks well on a lead before you start running with them
Opt for a harness over a collar to reduce the risk of neck injuries if your dog suddenly changes direction

There’s no blanket law that means dogs need to be on leads in public spaces in the UK, but private land and local authorities may have their own rules that you should follow. Plus, it’s often safer for you and your dog to keep them on a lead at all times.

Walking your dog in the UK.

• Keep your dog on a lead wherever there are livestock present
• If there are signs requiring it, such as parks, beaches, pedestrian zones, and sports pitches, you may be fined if your dog is not on a lead
• If you’re letting your dog off lead in a public place, make sure they’re good at coming to you when you call
• If you know your dog isn’t good around other dogs or people, don’t risk taking them off the lead
