FAQs

Which types of collars are there?
  • Combat: heavy-duty and built for strength with our signature combat clip, available in 2.5cm, 4cm and 5cm widths to suit everything from lean breeds to giant guardians.
  • Pin Buckle: a classic, secure fastening that's simple, sturdy and adjustable. Also perfect for strong breeds.
  • LED: built-in lighting for safety on dark walks, early mornings or winter evenings.
  • Billowthane: our waterproof, wipe-clean design - ideal for muddy walks, water-loving dogs, or anyone fed up of soggy, smelly nylon.
How tight should a dog collar be

Snug, not tight. You should be able to comfortably fit two fingers flat underneath the collar - any looser and it's a slip risk, any tighter and it'll rub, restrict breathing, or dig into their coat. Recheck the fit regularly, especially after a groom, a growth spurt, or any change in weight.

What to look for in a dog collar

Fit, strength and comfort, in equal measure. Look for solid hardware - D-rings and buckles that won't bend under pressure - a width suited to your dog's size and strength, and a lining that won't rub or irritate their neck. Reinforced stitching matters too, especially for strong pullers; a collar's only as good as its weakest seam. But we all know collars are a style accessory too, which is why you’ll want one that works but looks cute too.

What is the 'two finger rule' for dog collars?

The two-finger rule for dog collars is a general rule to check if your dog’s collar fits them properly. It should be loose enough to fit two fingers between your dog’s collar and their neck, but not too loose that you can rotate them.

Check your dog’s collar with the two finger rule:

  1. Put your first and middle finger under your dog’s collar.
  2. Room to do it, but still snug around your fingers? The collar fits well.
  3. Have to force your fingers under the collar? It’s too tight.
  4. Plenty of room to rotate your fingers? It’s too loose.

Having the right fit on your dog’s collar is important, as it keeps them safe and comfortable. Too tight, and it could irritate their skin or disrupt their breathing. Too loose and they could easily slip out while you’re on a walk - especially if they pull.

To help you find the perfect collar size for your dog, we’ve put together collar sizing charts for you to use - you can find these on the relevant product page of the collar you choose for your dog!

Do dogs have to wear collars

In the UK, yes. By law, dogs in public places must wear a collar with an ID tag showing the owner's name and address - microchipping is also a legal requirement, but it doesn't replace the collar rule. Plenty of owners give their dog a collar-free break at home, but out and about, it isn't optional.
