Restarting Training After Summer Fun 🐶

Because ā€œsitā€ shouldn’t come with a 5-second delay.

Let’s be honest, over the summer your dog’s "stay" turned into "stray," and ā€œheelā€ became ā€œrun directly into the ice cream truck.ā€ We get it.

Between beach days, BBQs, and all those off-schedule adventures, routines took a backseat. But now? It's time to tighten the lead (metaphorically... and maybe literally) and help your dog get #BackOnTrackBB.

Here’s how to ease back into training without starting from scratch, or losing your mind:

1. Reboot with the Basics 🦓

Before you bust out the agility cones and obstacle courses, return to your core commands:

  • Sit

  • Stay

  • Come

  • Leave it

  • Stop stealing socks, please (still working on making that one official)

Reinforce them daily in short, consistent bursts. Think 5-10 minutes a day, enough to sharpen focus without overwhelming your dog (or you).

2. Routine is the Real MVP šŸ•’

Dogs love structure almost as much as they love dropped snacks. Reintroduce a regular walk–train–play–rest rhythm. A consistent schedule will help your dog feel secure and more responsive during training sessions.

Pro tip: Use walks as mini training ops! Practice sit-stays at corners, or work on lead manners between sniffs.

3. Make It Fun (Yes, Even ā€œDownā€ Can Be a Party) šŸŽ¾

Training should feel like playtime with a purpose. Mix in toys, praise, and high-value treats (we’re talking peanut butter royalty level). If your dog knows training = fun + snacks, they’ll come running... literally.

4. Set Realistic Expectations 🐾

Don’t expect perfect behaviour on Day 1, remember your dog’s brain has been on holiday too. Be patient. Celebrate small wins like fewer squirrel chases or improved eye contact. Progress over perfection, always.

5. Gear Up for Success šŸ’Ŗ

Sometimes a little extra support goes a long way. Consider gear that helps you stay in control and your dog stay focused, like ourĀ Tri-Harness & Lead Combo, or grooming tools like the BullyBillows Deshedding Comb (because less fluff = fewer distractions).

6. Join a Training Class (Yes, There’s One for That!) šŸŽ“

If you need a little structure or your dog does better with social motivation (hello, pack learners!), sign up for a local training class. Professional guidance + group accountability = training transformation.

7. Share Your Comeback Journey šŸ“±

Your dog's glow-up deserves to be seen. Whether it's mastering ā€œleave itā€ or finally sitting before crossing the road, tag us using #BackOnTrackBB, we might just feature your goodest boy/girl!

Final Woof

Summer may have been all fun and games, but autumn is the perfect time to reset, refocus, and remember that a well-trained dog = a happier, safer, more confident companion.

So grab those treats, channel your inner pack leader, and show your dog that ā€œsitā€ isn’t a suggestion, it’s a comeback.
